Updates from the farm: Heat wave

India in the kale fieldsToday in Montclair the temperatures climbed to 93 degrees. In Milton, NY where Hepworth Farms is located , it wasn’t quite that hot but close to 90 degrees. The staff is usually at the farm for 12 hours: 7 am to 7 pm including their daily morning workout and three family style meals together, but today work ended at 3:30 pm to get everyone out of the heat. The farmers and their staff stopped for a picnic in the fields, some cool drinks and then headed home to get out of the heat. Tomorrow they will start their day earlier, before 6 am so they can harvest before the middle of the day heat. One recipe served at their picnic is their favorite kale salad, created by Gerry’s daughter Lasha. They like to use Lacinato Kale, but really you can use whichever one you like best:

1 bunch kale, cut into 1/4-inch strips horizontally, about 4 cups
1/4 red onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1/3 cup hazelnuts, toasted and roughly chopped
1 ounce Gruyere cheese, finely grated
1 tablespoon olive oil & a squeeze of lime
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

1. Combine the first four ingredients in a large bowl, and toss to combine.
2. Drizzle the olive oil over the ingredients, a squeeze of lime, and add salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Toss to combine, and serve.

The farmers promised they will send kale in the delivery this Friday so we can make this recipe.

The rest of the week calls for thunderstorms. The farm staff will wear ponchos and pick between the rain drops. If it is raining on Friday during pick up the CSA shares will be held in the garage at the end of the property, close to Rocky the horse’s stable.

Stay cool! See you Friday!
