Montclair State University’s Center for Heritage and Archeological Studies is conducting a shovel test survey on our Orange Road grounds. In a shovel test survey, a series of small shovel test pits about the width of a shovel are dug in a variety of locations on a site. The students will sift the dirt removed from the pits searching for artifacts, which are cleaned, identified, and catalogued. Significant clusters may be earmarked for a more intensive archeological dig. Stop by and watch history in action. Work is generally underway by 9 am and ends around 3 pm. Watch for updates on the Montclair Historical Society’s website, as the weather has a major impact on this event!
